Botox® Injections: 3 Facts You Need to Know

Stylized happy woman to illustrate 3 facts about Botox® injections
April 30, 2022

Are you Botox®-curious, but you just haven’t been able to make the leap yet? If that’s the case, you’ve probably scanned through dozens of articles about Botox® injections that lay out the facts. The trouble is they just aren’t giving you the confidence you need to move forward with calling for a consultation.

That’s okay. You’re discerning – you care about your health and your skin. Those are good things. But it sure can get frustrating reading the same articles over and over again.

So – rather than send you down yet another pointless reading rabbit hole, today I’m going to cover three Botox® facts that you may not know. I’m also going to mention upfront that at our clinic, we mostly use another form of botulinum toxin type A that’s called Jeuveau. I’ll tell you more about Jeuveau in a moment – it’s nicknamed “Newtox” because it’s similar but different!

But first, Botox®.

1 Botox® Injections Are Among the Safest Wrinkle and Fold-Reducing Procedures Available

The most common question I’m asked, whether by one of my patients or a Botox®-curious friend, is, “Is Botox® safe?” To answer that, we’ll take a walk down memory lane.

The story of Botox® begins far earlier than my own memory. Dr. Justinus Kerner discovered Botox® in the 1820s. Back then, it wasn’t called Botox®. It was called botulinum toxin because it’s a neurotoxic protein formed from a bacterium. Over time, this bacterial neurotoxin was extensively researched and produced as Botox®.

The FDA approved Botox® to treat eye muscle spasms in 1989. In 2002, they approved it for treating wrinkles. Since then, it’s become the most popular cosmetic injectable for treating fine lines and wrinkles – so you can set your safety concerns aside!

2 Men Are Getting Botox® Now More Than Ever

When most people think of Botox® injections, they think of women who want smoother, younger-looking skin. But over the years, I’ve noticed more and more men coming in for botulinum toxin treatments, too.

After doing a little research, I discovered that the number of men getting Botox® injections has increased by 337 percent since 2000.

Some men are encouraged by their significant others to seek out Botox® injections! Others see how awesome their wife or girlfriend’s treatments turned out and how these injections could benefit them, too.

3 Botox® Injections Aren’t Just For Wrinkles

What is Botox® used for? Even though Botox® is best known for paralyzing the muscles under wrinkles, it can also be used for other cosmetic and medical conditions.

Medical uses for Botox® injections include treating conditions such as neck spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, and lazy eye. Botox® injections may also help prevent chronic migraines.

Cosmetically speaking, however, Botox® offers so many benefits that it’s hard to keep up. Here are my top three favorites:

  • Botox® injections can reduce the appearance of dynamic and static wrinkles.
  • Add a few dermal filler injections to your appointment, and you can mimic the effects of a facelift.
  • Botox® can enhance your lips by smoothing creases, lip lines, and wrinkles around your lips, and flipping your upper lip into a cute cupid’s Bow!

What about Jeuveau, the “Newtox” on the block?

Jeuveau is similar to Botox® but different – different because the ingredient is the same but the exact formula is different.

And since it’s the latest addition to the botulinum toxin type A group of treatments, the FDA has so far only approved it for glabellar lines. That’s your “elevens” between your brows! We like Jeuveau – it’s had good trial results, and is very popular with our patients. It’s also slightly cheaper.

However, we’re more than happy to talk with you about both Jeuveau and Botox® to make sure your choice of treatment suits you best.

And for a treatment that takes under 15 minutes, removing some of your frown (and other) lines with either Botox® or Jeuveau is a no-brainer. I’ve had patients come in for botulinum toxin and dermal filler treatments on their lunch breaks, on their way to pick up the kids from school, and in between meetings.
